Yellow dog relaxing on carpet and tile

Summer Bucket List

Posted on August 1, 2026August 1, 2026 by Barbara

Mom and Dad are spending more time indoors these days. Could it be because they feel like a baking loaf of sourdough bread when they walk outside?

But suddenly, they start doing stuff instead of playing ball with me. Dad makes a lot of noise in the garage. Mom snoops through her desk drawers and tosses mounds of paper in the garbage can. Doesn’t she realize I am the ultimate recycler? I live to rip up paper. They call this activity crossing off chores on their summer bucket list. Things that need to be done inside the house while it’s too hot to play outside.

I have a bucket list of my own.

  • Keep my bucket filled with fresh, cool water.
  • Convince Mom and Dad that every meal deserves a bite of bacon. They try to hide a small pink nugget under my kibble. Then they stare at me while I eat to make sure I don’t scoot it under my dish or “accidentally” cough it up on the tile. I think it would be an excellent idea if they wrapped the pink object in a strip of bacon first.
  • Catch that bouncy rabbit who tries to hide in the flower garden. He’s been banned from our yard, but somehow, he always sneaks under our fence. After he ate Mom’s pansies, I promised her I would guard the yard.
  • Find the coolest spot in the house before anyone else does. There are several, but the best place where the air conditioner fluffs my fur with a cool breeze is on the bed about six inches from the edge. Sorry Mom; me first.
  • Practice my ice catching techniques. I come running when I hear Dad filling his glass with ice from the refrigerator, and my mission is to steal every ice cube that hits the kitchen floor before it melts.

I think Mom and Dad take the holiday “Work Like a Dog” a little too seriously during the month of August. My suggestion is to fast forward a week to the next holiday called “Spoil Your Dog Day” and take your best fur friend to DQ for a pup cup. Remember, summer isn’t measured by how many things you accomplish. It’s measured by the memories you make with the people, and pets, you love.

Stay cool, Dear Readers, and be sure to include the dog when the ice machine spews those cubes out.
