I keep a close watch on my mom and dad. They can be quite elusive at times, so I make sure I follow them wherever they go.
Take my mom for example. She does a lot of walking down the hall, into bedrooms, back to the kitchen, into the laundry room. It’s exhausting, but I make sure I’m a few steps behind her. Sometimes I lead, but that gets me in trouble because I anticipate Mom is going into one room, and she fools me and goes into another room.
There are some puzzling moments, however. Sometimes she’ll go into a little room and close the door. I stand and look at the door for a while, then I get tired and lie down, still focused on the closed door. I’m certain there is a trap door or window where she escapes. But I patiently wait. When she finally opens the door, she always gives me a pat and says, “Good boy.”
It’s fun to follow Mom when she says, “Let’sfeedthebirds.” We get to go outside, and she pours seed in the feeder. When we come inside, she stands by the window and says, “Look at all those Quincy the Quails eating the bird seed.” My eyes are focused on the bunny hiding under the bush.
Almost every day Mom says, “Timetowatertheflowers.” So, I follow her real closely outside to sniff the flowers and grass. Sometimes she waters me with the hose. She knows I’m not a water dog, so I don’t know why she does that. I squint and shake, but I forgive her.
(In my defense, I don’t purposely spray Larry with water. He stands too close to the flowers and then the water blows on him. -Signed, Mom)
There’s one room where I won’t follow Mom. When I hear water running, I realize it’s the little room where I get a bath. No water, no way. I’ve mentioned before; I’m not a water dog.
It’s hard to keep up with Dad. He likes to hide from me, but I always find him. My nose is pretty sharp. Sometimes he goes through a door and shuts it. I stand patiently, staring at the closed door, wondering if he might escape through a window too. Then he lets me in to this big room and tosses the empty milk bottle around for me to catch, pounce, and chew on.
I know the perfect way to keep Mom and Dad still. I place my head on their lap when we snuggle on the sofa. They can’t move then.
Love,
Larry
