I love my walks. When we get up in the morning, I stare at Mom and follow her around the house because I know we are going for a walk soon. Sometimes I have to wait a long time. She says she’s waiting for the sun to come up. I don’t care if the sun is up or not, my nose can still find all the great outdoor smells. But she always makes excuses, like “We might run into a coyote,” or “It’s too cold.” I think she just wants to drink that stinky coffee.
Lately the sun has been coming up earlier, so thankfully I get to go out before the coffee. I’ve noticed a few changes too. It’s not as cold. Mom doesn’t have to wear her gloves. The little white dogs aren’t wearing their sweaters. There’s more light on the sunny side of the street. The green trees are turning yellow. The cactus has flowers. Could it be this thing called Spring is coming to the desert?
I listen to the neighbors as they talk in the middle of the street. Apparently, Phoenix has only two seasons, Spring and Summer, with a week of Winter thrown in for variety. The time of year doesn’t really affect me because life is good: indoor sun puddles to lay on, garden flowers to sniff, and couch sitting with Mom & Dad.
Watching Spring outside is interesting. I keep my eyes on the birds in my yard, and I’m seeing a lot of big ones run back and forth. I’m thinking there should be some little ones following the big ones soon. I’ve been instructed to not chase them, though. Sometimes when they scratch for seeds, one will shoo the other one away. They hop in Mom’s flower garden too. Naughty birds! Then there are the lizards who reappear and do push-ups on the rocks like they own the place. I let them think that. There’s no sense in biting one and feeling their scaley skin on my tongue. Blech! Dad used to do push-ups. Being eye level, I liked to lick his face.
March is filled with fun things to do. Spring allows you to go for your walks earlier in the mornings. You can wear green on St. Patrick’s Day. And you could get a puppy for National Puppy Day. Let me know if you do, and I’ll help train the little stinker. I’m a very versatile canine.
Happy Spring!

Love, Larry
