Dog sitting by orange and yellow flowers and pumpkins

October Sights, Sounds, and Smells

Posted on September 30, 2026September 30, 2026 by Barbara

Hiss! Swoosh! Humm mm!

There are those sounds again. It happens every year about this time. Gigantic pumpkins and witches and scarecrows suddenly grow in our neighbor’s yard. The oversized black cat hisses at me; the ghost says “swoosh” when I walk by; and the haunted house emits a continuous humm mm. I’d love to take a bite out of the guy with the green face, but Mom has a pretty tight grip on my leash. Thank goodness our front porch just has some orange flowers and fake pumpkins.

Speaking of going for a walk (I heard you say it) I can finally walk on the sidewalk without wearing my socks. It takes Mom 12 minutes and 32 seconds to grab my paws and pull those darn things on up to my elbows. I can’t be too harsh on her because they do keep my paw pads from burning on the brick oven hot concrete in the summer. As the air gets cooler, Dad doesn’t complain as much about leaving the door open. My nostrils move at record time as I stand at the screen and sniff all the wonderful scents. There’s Nelson, my dog friend; fresh dirt under the flowers Mom just planted; grass from the golf course; but wait, what’s that metal dust smell? Oh, yeah, it’s the train. Close the door.

I’m still partial to kitchen smells like fried chicken, roast beef, and maple syrup covered carrots. Mom has taken up baking again and is trying all these delicious sweets like pumpkin bread and pumpkin cookies and pumpkin pie. She even drinks pumpkin-flavored coffee. Yuck! Did you know pumpkin is good for dogs to eat? That’s why she saves a scoop and puts it in my dish. Pumpkin tastes yummy, and it’s good for my tummy.

Sometimes on the last day of October short humans go door to door dressed like ghosts, Spiderman, and princesses. They ring the doorbell 247 times to ask for candy. I’m told not to bark, but it’s kind of hard not to when the little person is wearing a mask, and they scare me by saying “boo!” I think I’ll guard the candy bowl instead.

As for the hissing blow ups, I’ll just walk in a different direction.

Don’t let the goblins scare you.

Love, Larry
