House Versus Home

Posted on November 1, 2026November 1, 2026 by Barbara

What makes a house a home? Humans have funny ideas about a home. They buy furniture. They hang pictures. They put things on shelves that I’m apparently not supposed to touch. Then they get that noisy machine out to suck up all my fur bunnies rolling down the hallway. They pull out a rag, which smells suspiciously like my dad, and move the dust around on the tabletops. They get the floor wet with a long-handled sponge after scolding me for leaving water droplets from my dish.

I have a different idea about what makes a house a home. First, you must have a wise and handsome Dog. Like me! Then you must have a comfy sofa that allows room for Mom, Dad, and Dog to sit and watch TV. Personally, I enjoy the dog food commercials. I stretch out between my humans so Dad can scratch behind my ears, and Mom can pat my booty.

Second, you must have a kitchen large enough to accommodate the Cook and the Dog. I’m very handy in the kitchen because I’m able to catch a wayward morsel of food before it hits the floor. Then the human doesn’t have to get the sponge-stick out. It also helps if the cupboards are a little older and don’t always close tightly. The smells inside are delicious, and I think the Cook could use my help in washing the pots and pans better.

November is the perfect time to think about the difference between a house and a home. As everyone is busy thinking about Thanksgiving, family, and the upcoming holidays, take a moment to notice your home this time of year:

  • The autumn decorations (I’m banned from eating the plastic pumpkins)
  • The delicious smells coming from the kitchen (I’m there to assist when any spillage occurs)
  • The Hallmark movies (I assume my position on the sofa between my loved ones)
  • The laughter with family and friends (especially the ones who bring me special treats)

A house is where you must vacuum, dust, and mop.

Home is where love is . . . and where the snacks are.
