Common Loon Calls

The Hoot is a short, single-note call. Click here to hear the Hoot.

The Tremolo occurs when the two parts of the Loon’s voice box make two sounds simultaneously. Click here to hear the Tremolo.

The Wail sounds like the howling of a wolf. It rises and falls in pitch and can be a one-note, two-note, or three-note call. Click here to hear the Wail.

The Yodel varies from region to region, and the size of the bird determines the pitch. The larger the bird, the lower the voice and vice versa. Studies of recordings have shown that the Yodel can be used to identify individual birds. Click here to hear the Yodel.
